About LaserShip
LaserShip is now OnTrac. Founded in 1986 as Laser Courier in the Washington, D.C. metro area, the company originally offered document delivery with a '15-minute call-to-pick-up' guarantee. It rebranded to LaserShip in 1999 during the dot-com boom and signed Barnes & Noble as its first e-commerce customer for last-mile book deliveries in New York City. In 2000, LaserShip launched a Global Critical Delivery (GCD) division providing air and ground solutions for aviation and medical shipments worldwide, including over 2,500 life-saving organ deliveries in 2018 alone. In 2014, LaserShip acquired Cleveland-based Prestige Delivery Systems, nearly doubling its footprint across 23 states. Meanwhile, OnTrac was founded in 1991 as California Overnight, a division of Express Messenger Systems (EMS), providing affordable next-day service between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In October 2021, LaserShip acquired OnTrac for $1.3 billion, combining complementary East and West coast delivery footprints. In July 2022, the unified company launched transcontinental delivery service moving packages coast to coast in as little as 3 days. In 2023, operations were rebranded under the single 'OnTrac' identity and expanded into Texas. As of 2026, OnTrac's hub-and-spoke network includes over 102 locations and 18 sort centers across 35 states and Washington, D.C., reaching approximately 70% of the U.S. population. The company partners with more than 7,000 independent contractors to provide same-day and next-day residential and business deliveries. OnTrac is positioned as the first major coast-to-coast alternative to national carriers like FedEx and UPS, specifically designed for e-commerce last-mile delivery, offering faster transit times and lower costs than traditional national carriers.
Tracking Number Format
OnTrac and legacy LaserShip tracking numbers come in several formats. The primary OnTrac format is a single letter ('D' or 'C') followed by 14 digits, totaling 15 characters (e.g., D10012345678901). Legacy LaserShip numbers may begin with '1LS', 'LS', 'LX', or 'BN' followed by digits (e.g., 1LS123456789). Both current and legacy formats are fully supported in OnTrac's tracking system. If you do not have a tracking number, contact your retailer — they provide it at the time of shipment. You can track packages on the OnTrac website tracking page or sign up for the NotifyMe program to receive real-time text alerts when your package goes out for delivery, when a delivery attempt is made, and when it is delivered. Tracking updates typically appear within 1-3 business days after the label is created.
